Apple has made an exciting announcement today regarding Self Service Repair. Starting from June 21, iPhone 14 models and certain Mac models, including the 13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro powered by M2, will be eligible for self-repairs. This initiative, which was introduced in April 2022, allows individuals with experience in electronic device repairs to access official Apple manuals, genuine Apple parts, and tools used by Apple Store locations and authorized service providers.
To further enhance the repair process for iPhones, Apple will be simplifying the System Configuration procedure, which is utilized for repairs involving components like displays, batteries, and cameras. This post-repair software tool ensures that repairs have been carried out correctly using genuine Apple parts that meet internationally recognized standards. System Configuration also verifies the proper functioning of the replaced parts. It is freely available to all users engaging in self-repairs and participating service providers within Apple’s repair programs.
System Configuration authenticates genuine Apple parts, updates firmware, and calibrates components to optimize performance and quality after a repair. Additionally, for repairs involving biometric authentication features like Touch ID or Face ID, System Configuration establishes a secure link between the biometric sensors and the Secure Enclave on the device’s logic board, ensuring both device security and customer privacy.
Users can now initiate System Configuration by entering Diagnostics mode on their devices and following the onscreen instructions. This eliminates the need to contact the Self Service Repair support team for the final step of the repair process, although the team will still be available for assistance if required.
The Self Service Repair option is also being expanded to include repairs for the TrueDepth camera and top speaker on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models, as well as Mac desktops with M1 chips. Initially, this expanded offering will be available in the United States, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
Apple’s Self Service Repair program is a part of their ongoing commitment to expanding repair accessibility. Accessible repairs are crucial in prolonging the lifespan of products, benefitting users and the environment. While self-repair is now an option, Apple emphasizes that for the majority of users without repair experience, seeking assistance from professional authorized repair providers with certified technicians using genuine Apple parts remains the safest and most reliable approach.
Over the past three years, Apple has significantly increased the number of service locations equipped with genuine Apple parts, tools, and training. This includes over 4,500 Independent Repair Providers and a global network of more than 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers, supporting over 100,000 skilled technicians.
